Nevada was one of Ron Paul’s best states. He came in a distant but definite second over McCain, Huckabee, etc (Romney won) in the Nevada caucuses to elect delegates to the state convention. And at that convention, the Paulites took over that convention! The Las Vegas Sun reported they seemed to have the majority of the delegates:
They seemed to make up more than half of the 1,300 or so state delegates to the convention. They won a key procedural vote on the rules, and their boisterous presence created significant delays, causing the convention chairman, Bob Beers, a state senator from Las Vegas, to recess the convention without selecting delegates to the national convention. The state convention is to resume at a later date.
That’s right. The GOP establishment in effect abolished the convention and reconvened it by conference call (!) to get the result they wanted: All for McCain. The Paulites did not flinch: They hosted their own convention:
Paul backers, spearheaded by Sparks dentist Wayne Terhune, are renting out the Grand Sierra casino in Reno this weekend to complete unfinished business from the party’s April 26 convention, which was cut short under controversial circumstances. The rogue GOP-Ron Paul supporter gathering planned for this weekend is neither sanctioned nor recognized by the Nevada Republican Party, which plans to resume the convention on July 26.
Now there is a candidate who shares many of Paul’s positions: Sharron Angle. I think Angle’s better for friends of liberty. Don’t take my word for it: Here’s Angle on the issues:
On the Federal Department of Education: Abolish it!
On the Federal Reserve: Audit it!
On the United Nations: Leave it!
Try this:
The U.N. has been captured by the far left and has become ineffective and costly. The U.N. continually threatens U.S. sovereignty, with endless rhetoric and treaties and it has now become the “umpire” on fraudulent science, such as global warming. The United State needs to withdraw from the United Nations and work solely with America’s willing allies.
Israel, a democratic nation, is the United States’ strongest ally in the Middle East. Israel’s sovereignty, stability and security are in the best interests of the United States, especially when dealing with radical Islamic terrorism.
I could hardly say it better although I would be afraid to withdraw from the UN due to its ability to hurt us. (Cong. Paul does say get out of the UN and he does not support Israel as much as I would like. However, the general pro-sovereignty point is made here clearly.)
But some Ron Paul supporters are behind Danny Tarkanian, son of the famous or infamous UNLV basketball coach. His education position is not as good as Angle’s but his foreign policy and Fed policy are right there with Paul’s. If Tark the son is anything like Tark the father, he might be good for the Senate. (The elder Tark dragged out NCAA sanctions for 11 years throuigh the courts. That’s determination!)
Need more proof: The Tea Party Express endorsed Angle. Guess what? Salon doesn’t like Angle; inplying she’s racist. (That’s reason enough to gave her a serious look!) Salon also criticized Angle for having a campaign newspaper:
Obviously, the Angle Examiner is, in some ways, just a quirkier form of the campaign pamphlets and literature every candidate for office produces. But the breathless tone of its writing, and the very un-slick design, makes it seem like one more piece of evidence that Angle may not be quite ready for prime time.
Salon forgets that such not ready for prime-time pols as Huey Long and Sen. “Fighting” Bob La Follette Sr., had their own newspapers (I first read about both papers in T. Harry Williams’ seminal tome on the Kingfish, Huey P. Long) to avdance their campaigns and issues. Here’s what DiscovertheNetWorks.org said about La Follette’s literary doings:
John Nichols went on to write for the radical magazine La Follette founded and edited, now called The Progressive. That magazine’s defining article posted on its web site, “Portrait of the Founder, Fighting Bob La Follette,” carries Nichols’ byline.
How fervent is Nichols in his near-worship of this radical? Although he “is a Quaker,” wrote Nichols on a personal data sheet he in 2002 gave to an emcee to introduce him as a speaker, he does accept “idol worship involving busts, photographs or other proven graven images of Robert M. LaFollette and William T. Evjue.”
(Evjue had been managing editor of the Wisconsin State Journal newspaper, resigning after it turned against an ever-more-radical La Follette. Evjue then in 1917 founded the pro-La Follette The Capital Times, “Wisconsin’s Progressive Newspaper,” where Nichols in recent years has been Editorial Page Editor and Associate Editor.)
Sharron Angle is in good company, even if a newspaper is something of a 20th Century paradigm. What she needs is a blogger! (I know a good one…he writes for Virginia Right and loves Ron Paul…might come cheap…) We’ll see if Sharron Angle wins on Tuesday: A recent poll is RCP has Angle up 8 points. The Dems can’t wait to run against her. They might want to watch what they wish for – they’ll liable to get it…just like the Polish communists who insisted on a guy named Wojtyla Archbishop of Krakow (I also give credit to George Weigel’s awesome book on Pope John Paul II):
In the early 1960s, Zenon Kliszko, the chief ideologist of the Polish Communist Party, vetoed seven candidates put forward by the Roman Catholic Church to be bishops. The party ideologist reasoned that Karol Wojtyla, who had expressed little interest in mundane politics, could be manipulated easily. This has to rank as one of the most monumental miscalculations of the 20th century.
And we all know Cardinal Benelli was elected Pope in 1978, continuing the Italian monopoly on the papacy…
