When it comes to Butler University basketball, my readers know I am a big fan. However, I am sure the Bulldogs need to get into a multi-bid basketball conference. Even last year, there was some doubt of Butler’s at large status (which they solved neatly by winning the Horizon crown) almost up to March.
But it appears Pittsburgh and Syracuse have agreed to join the ACC! These schools cannot play ACC football and Big East basketball so the basketball conference (different from the football one) will need a new member or two in an important media market.
Enter Butler! Butler is clearly a rising power, would benefit from the increased competition of a major basketball conference, the coach will be easier to keep since he’ll have a better chance to win a national championship, and Indianapolis is in a major media market. I have no inside information but have believed that the next time the Big East expands the basketball side (and all other sports but football) they would take a serious look at Butler.
